Registered nurses provide a wide variety of patient care services. They deliver direct patient care, educate patients, provide advice, and assist other medical professionals in health care settings. The registered nurse job description often depends on the specific duties of the nurse and environment they work in. However, most nurses receive basic training by completing a registered nurse program from an accredited college or university.

Registered Nurse Job Description and Duties

Direct Patient Care. Almost every registered nurse will provide direct care to patients. Some typical duties include recording medical history and symptoms, administer medicines or and treatments, and record patient health such as weight, height, blood pressure, etc.

Educate Patients. One common set of duties listed in registered nurse job descriptions is educating patients and their families about illnesses or injuries. This type of education is used to prevent additional or future injury or illness. Also, by educating family members, they can provide a support system for the patient.

Provide Advice. Sometimes patients need advice or have questions about their symptoms. Registered nurses are trained to provide advice on broad array of medical issues. Many patients can be assisted without having to see a physician. Part of the registered nurse job description may include providing advice to patients in an office or over the phone.

Assist Other Professionals. Registered nurses are an essential element of almost every medical organization. They provide the support to other medical professionals such as physicians, surgeons, and therapists to help with the less critical duties of patient care.
