High Demand for North Dakota Nurses in Rural Communities

The North Dakota Board of Nursing (NDBN) reports that the state is experiencing rapid growth and high demand in the nursing field, but is finding difficulty filling positions. Some of the highest need positions are the licensed practical nurse (LPN), registered nurse (RN), and advanced practice registered nurse (APRN). Finding nursing professionals to take jobs in rural North Dakota communities is a challenge. Many hospitals in North Dakota are using every recruitment tool available to fill their nurse vacancies.

Recruitment Efforts

In their 2013 annual report, the NDBN indicates that North Dakota registered nurse turnover is 18%, up from 16% in 2010. This is followed by another high turnover rate of 14% for LPNs. To battle turnover and vacancies, some hospitals are making their positions more enticing. One example is Sanford Health in Fargo, ND. Sanford not only is helping some nurses move to North Dakota with relocation assistance, but in some cases offering sign-on bonuses up to $15,000. There is also a hope that registered nurse programs in North Dakota will be successful in their recruitment efforts of new students over the next period.

Some of the highest paid nursing jobs in North Dakota are located in the rural communities. The NDBN reports that on average, rural hospitals have higher starting wages than their urban counterparts. This is even more apparent when you compare North Dakota RN salary data provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The average RN salary in North Dakota is $53,300 per year, or about $25 per hour. While this is lower than the national average, it’s significantly higher when compared with the average salary of $50k paid in the state’s capital Bismarck. Many rural communities are having to offer higher salaries to combat high vacancy and turnover rates.

As of 2013 North Dakota had 12,810 licensed registered nurses and 3,744 licensed practical nurses. The BLS projects that the nursing field will grow by 22% between 2010 and 2020. This could result in more than 5,000 new nursing jobs in North Dakota by the year 2020. While the demand for nurses will grow, there aren’t necessarily qualified people to fill the positions.
